Private Goal Reveal

12/3/2020

For the last couple of months, I have had a private goal in my monthly resolution chart, and I wanted to share what that was today. At the beginning of October, I used the voice memo feature on my phone to record some self-talk scripts for me to listen to throughout the day. In Shad Helmstetter’s book: “What to say when you talk to yourself”, he had some scripts for different things (like worry, problem solving, self-esteem, etc.). I recorded them in my own voice and have been listening to them most days since then. There were also some in a bible study I was doing at the time and I recorded those as well. Helmsetter also has a website where you can stream pre-recorded ones, but it costs about $20 per month after the first month and I wanted to try this way first to see how it went.

I have to say, I think it is really helping in some ways to re-wire my brain and think about things differently. For example, one of the talks I recorded is on being organized. It says something about creating a to-do list each night.  I have a weekly printed to-do list that I use most weeks, but I have found myself bringing it over by me on the couch each night and adding stuff to it for the next day without even really thinking about it. Other talks seem to be a little harder to internalize, like the problem-solving one. My typical solution to problems is to ignore them and hope they go away. I think I am thinking about them a little differently now, but still struggle to face them head on rather than my typical head in the sand approach lol. I am continuing to listen to the recordings this month and I will also be trying my hand at writing some specifically for some things I want to work on.

Am I truly “re-wiring” my brain or is it all in my mind? I guess it really doesn’t matter if it is working. And I guess in some ways, they’re the same thing.

My passion is to share the importance of playing, and not just as a child, but as an adult also. It is so important to take the time to play and be active. Our children are losing that.
