As I was listening to The Happiness Lab during one of my walks, she was talking about how choosing a special date to make a big change can be helpful. I mean, if you think about it, we already do it when we make New Year’s resolutions or determine to “start our diet on Monday”. For instance, she gave the idea of choosing “the first day of Spring” versus a random date like March 20th (or whatever day the first day of Spring falls on). Gretchen Rubin discusses this too, talking about using the power of the “clean slate” for habit change. So, starting a new job or a new school or moving, these all provide the opportunity of the clean slate.
I have said many times this year that every day is the start of a new year and I truly believe that. When are you going to make some of those positive habit changes you’ve been thinking about? You can start small, it’s what I did. At the first of the year, I was walking 5-10 minutes at a time throughout the day to get my #walk20in20 goal. I gradually built up to what I am doing now, which is walking 25-30 minutes each morning and then several shorter walks throughout the day. I started out by writing down what I was eating (not changing anything, just being honest about it) and then then gradually added fruits and vegetables and other healthier choices to my meals. This will hopefully work towards creating change that lasts in my health.
So today I want to ask you, what is your clean slate? Is it the first day of Fall? Is it your birthday? Is it the start of a new month? Choose your clean slate and the one small habit you want to change and start there.
